Music and the Arts

Where students find their voice, their vision and their stage.
At TAS, the Arts are not an afterthought. They are a vital part of a whole education, developing creativity, confidence, discipline and self-expression in ways that complement and enrich every other area of a student's learning. From the very first year of school through to Year 12, every TAS student has the opportunity to discover and develop their artistic voice, whether that is through music, drama or visual art.
A school that truly sings.
Music at TAS is a thriving, joyful discipline that reaches across every year level and every corner of school life. Studied as part of the curriculum from Prep to Year 8, and available as an elective pathway from Year 9 onwards, music at TAS is as much about community as it is about craft. The friendships formed in an ensemble, the confidence built on a stage and the discipline developed through years of practice are gifts that last well beyond the final performance.

Every term, TAS musicians take part in a major concert or the much-loved Rock Under the Stars event. Throughout the year they perform at Trinity Day, Gala Night and Speech Night, as well as offsite concerts and community events across Cairns. TAS choirs and ensembles are also regular participants in the Cairns and District Junior Eisteddfod.

Finding the courage to step onto centre stage.
AS Drama encourages students to develop a genuine love for the dramatic arts by blending technical skill with creative inspiration. Students develop acting techniques and participate in workshops and productions ranging from Shakespeare and mime to contemporary theatre. Drama at TAS teaches students to listen, collaborate, take risks and communicate with presence, skills that extend far beyond the stage.

TAS regularly produces major school productions, supported by a dedicated student technical crew and specialist choreographers. These productions are ambitious, polished and genuinely memorable. Recent productions have included Fame and Grease. Primary students also have the opportunity to perform in annual recitals and community performances throughout the year.
Seeing the world differently. Creating something new.
Visual Art at TAS develops students' passion for art and design through a rich range of techniques and mediums, from drawing and painting to photography and wearable art. The program run from Prep to Year 12 is enriched by visits from professional artists and excursions to local exhibitions, giving students direct exposure to the creative industry and the people who work within it.

Students are actively encouraged to enter local and national art competitions and to exhibit their work at school promotional evenings and art shows. Senior Visual Art students regularly participate in prestigious exhibitions and competitions including the Cairns Show Photography and Wearable Art Competitions, the Write About Art by Flying Art Competition, Creative Generation at the TANKS Art Centre and Receive and Respond.
The Arts develop the whole person.
Whether a student goes on to pursue the Arts professionally or carries their creative practice quietly into another field entirely, the skills developed through music, drama and visual art at TAS are ones they will draw on for life. Creativity, confidence, discipline, collaboration and the ability to express ideas with clarity and conviction, these are not soft skills. They are essential ones. And at TAS, they are nurtured from the very first day of school.
